Start with the material
Keep the supplier’s exact material identification and finish with your purchase record. A decorative name or an online photograph is not enough to choose a treatment. Ask what has already been applied and request the care instructions for that particular surface. This is especially useful for a small tray bought through a marketplace, where the listing may say little about the finish.
Separate stain resistance from surface damage
The Natural Stone Institute describes impregnating sealers as repellents: they improve resistance to staining rather than making stone stain-proof. It also distinguishes etching from staining; an acid can change a finish without leaving a stain. A sealer is not a universal remedy for a dull mark. [1]
Do not buy by calendar alone
The Institute notes that sealing can benefit some surfaces, while not every granite countertop requires it. [2] Ask the supplier whether treatment is needed for your specific stone and finish, which product is compatible and how to assess when it should be renewed. Do not turn a generic “seal every year” rule into a purchase without that information.
Ask a more useful product question
Instead of asking which sealer is best, send the supplier the material name, finish, previous treatment if known and a description of the use. Request a recommendation in writing. Follow the selected product’s instructions for testing, preparation, application and curing. Our editorial preference is to keep that answer with the piece, so the next decision starts from evidence rather than a half-remembered product name.
Buy only what the surface needs
If the issue is a new mark, photograph it and ask the supplier or a stone restoration professional before trying a treatment. Our journal currently uses ordinary source links, not commission-bearing product links. When we introduce an affiliate recommendation, its commercial relationship will be identified beside the link. A care purchase should solve a verified need, not just complete a shopping list.
